Custom Shields
All shields are handmade in our shop. We construct the shields with steel rivets and nails in a historically accurate fashion. Choose from the following options:
Construction: Shields are made from 1/2” plywood which is actually about 7/16” thick. Plywood core construction is a single piece of plywood. Planked construction is made from 5 planks of plywood.
Facing: Shield face can be wood with no covering, or a thick canvas can be added. We recommend the canvas covering for planked shields to add strength.
Pattern: Shield can be made with just a primer coat on the face or painted in a swirl or quartered pattern.
Paint colors: Black, blue, red, yellow, and white.
Backside: Back of shield can be natural with no stain, stained a light ipswich pine or dark red oak, or have a natural linen covering.
Shield boss: Choose either the economical steel spun boss, or the more historical steel hammered boss.
Rim: Rawhide rims are great for plywood core or planked construction shields. We offer a tacked on rawhide rim and also a stronger riveted on rawhide rim. Steel rims are 26ga steel and riveted onto shield. Single steel rim is just on the face of the shield and is good for plywood core construction shields. Double steel rim is on the face and back of the shield and must be used for planked construction shields.
Grip: Grip comes with natural wood or can be leather covered.
Armstrap: Leather forearm strap can be added.
Weights of shields will vary. Shield with rawhide rim will weigh around 7.5lbs. Shield with double steel rim will weight about 8.5lbs.
Typically ship in 4-8 weeks.
